RING OUT, WILD BELLS documents a number of projects we uncovered when researching the environment of independent and artist-led publishing in Ireland and the circumstances that gave way to projects like Bloomers.
Limiting our focus to activity in Ireland allowed us to shape our enquiry around geographically embedded narratives and projects which explore ‘publishing’, as it is understood to mean ‘public-making’ – and traditional print publishing as just one mechanism of achieving this.
A discussion regarding cultural access in urban and rural areas weaves through this publication, illuminated by insights into censorship practises in Ireland, acts of spatial-justice and narrative reclamation.
The innovative ways artists and groups elucidate that which should be public to the public, interrogate the meaning of ‘public’ and contribute diverse and vital perspectives to our culture are ceaseless. RING OUT, WILD BELLS documents a number of independent publishing projects, public-making projects; describes zines and zine makers, podcasts, community groups and archive resources dedicated to unique, experimental and political storytelling in Ireland.
